Toowoomba alt-rock outfit Cardboard Cutouts have today released their hard-hitting and emotive new single My Best Friend. A “tale of loss, love, and lack of purpose”, the new release is destined for sweaty moshpits and festival singalongs with its heavy, melodic riffs and soaring chorus carried by frontman Eliot Argus’ distinct vocals.

“‘My Best Friend’ is about a friend who was involved in a toxic relationship with someone and had substance abuse issues,” the band reveal. “They lost sight of who they were and what their purpose was. This song tells the story of that battle from an observer who is struggling to cope with what is happening, but has lost any bit of leverage to help and support the person.”

My Best Friend arrives alongside the announcement of a five-date headline tour along the east coast. Cardboard Cutouts will play to crowds in Brisbane, Toowoomba, Melbourne, Canberra, and Newcastle next month in celebration of the new release.

The live stage is where Cardboard Cutouts’ discography truly comes alive, and it’s their exhilarating, community-building performances that have seen them grow from playing school events to sharing stages with the likes of Grinspoon’s Phil Jamieson, Greta Stanley, Vera Blue, Concrete Surfers, and more. In 2023, the band embarked on a six-date headline tour of Queensland and northern New South Wales, playing packed out shows in intimate venues across Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, and Byron Bay.

From the sunny DIY energy of their debut single Such Is Life, to the textured and rich sound of 2023’s ‘Patchwork’ EP and delicate fan-favourite Grandma’s Curtains, Cardboard Cutouts have moved from strength to strength. The first taste of a larger body of work due later this year, My Best Friend signals an elevated new chapter for the band, and is set to be their most impactful work to date.
