Having made plenty of noise at Brisbane’s BIGSOUND with two electric showcase performances last month, Jimmy and Lew of Sophisticated Dingo are set to keep the pace high with the release of their expressive new single Been Thinking, out now. The song received a first play on triple j’s Good Nights with Ruby Miles last night.
Weaving through bursting layers of pop and sparse, punchy sing-a-long moments, Been Thinking delves into the unravelling of a fake smile. “It is commonplace to fake a smile in disguise of the stress and anguish you are feeling,” says vocalist and guitarist Lewis Matte. “This decoy might avoid detection momentarily, but is weakly maintained at best. Even the smallest of inconveniences can trigger all of your screws to come loose. Despite best intentions, your true colours shine bright, and for the better. The real you is out in the open. You can connect with the chaos of the real world rather than hide away in your fantasy of control and calm.”
Been Thinking is Sophisticated Dingo’s fourth release of 2023, arriving after their all-gas-no-brakes belter VCR in August and a run of packed out headline shows along the east coast. Both tracks follow the duo’s hit single Radio On, which held a top 50 spot on triple j’s most played list for 2 months after being added to full rotation – peaking at third most played – and received airplay on BBC Radio 1’s Future Alternative.
Childhood best mates Jimmy and Lew have stacked up an incredible list of high notes, with several previous singles including Morning View and Day In The Life added to rotation on triple j, snagging the coveted Unearthed Feature Artist slot, and winning the Unearthed x NIDA music video competition for their song The Job I Took. Their engaging live presence has led to the band running up an impressive tally of tours, with multiple national headline runs of their own amidst supporting the likes of Beddy Rays, Dear Seattle, The Terrys, Press Club, Towns, and Bakers Eddy.
