Brisbane emo-metalcore icons Stepson are charging into a villainous new era with their unrelenting new single, Venom. A far cry from the band’s melodic beginnings, Venom is a sonic pivot into louder, more aggressive territory that hits like a shotgun blast to the chest.
Produced by Callan Orr (Make Them Suffer, Bad Juju, Dream On Dreamer), with a mix and master by Lance Prenc (Polaris, Alpha Wolf, Void of Vision), Venom trades in heartbreak for rage, capturing a more abrasive and visceral side to Stepson than ever heard before. The track is a definitive mission statement and was made to be felt in the pit.
“When we started, we were heartbroken kids writing music trying to understand why we had been hurt or left behind,” shares bassist/vocalist Jayden Ridley. “Now we’re older and we’re not those sad kids looking to understand those emotions. We understand them now and we’re angry. I think Venom showcases just that. It’s a song for those who are pissed off by how they’ve been treated, and we’re not scared of being the villain anymore.
Their new single follows Stepson’s 10 Year celebration shows in Sydney and Brisbane, where the latter completely sold out. Reconnecting with fans in close quarters, the shows were a roaring success and reaffirmed Stepson‘s presence as mainstays in Australia’s alternative community.
The quintet have built their reputation off the back of their heart-on-sleeve releases over the years, including their 2021 debut album ‘Help Me, Help You’, which claimed 2021’s The Triffid Queensland Album Of The Year and was immortalised on the coveted Triffid Hero Wall, joining the likes of The Go Betweens, Powderfinger, The Chats and more.
Stepson have since shared stages with genre titans Caskets (UK), Northlane, Ocean Sleeper and more, and they’ve appeared at festivals including Unify Gathering and Full Tilt. Venturing beyond their home turf, Stepson have toured Europe and the UK, sharing stages with Polaris, Alpha Wolf, and Great American Ghost (US).
