Nipaluna/Hobart-based trio Verticoli have returned in 2023 with their new single Genesis – engineered, produced and mixed by Jon Grace (Dear Seattle, Dune Rats) , and mastered by Forrester Savell (Make Them Suffer, Karnivool, The Butterfly Effect) .

Following an intense year of writing, recording and touring their second album ‘The Echo’ , Genesis is a reflection of a more relaxed time spent writing and honing songs in the studio. It’s a brooding track inspired by Phil Collins’ characteristic drums, and the dark and beautiful sounds of Queens of the Stone Age and Jane’s Addiction. Producer Jon Grace pushed vocalist and guitarist Sam Hunn in the studio to find a new, softer part of his voice to fit the energy of the song.

Sam describes the lyrical inspiration for Genesis: “The lyrics came about from trying to create a song that had contrasting light and dark parts throughout. What came out was the idea of being alienated from what you know – what brings you comfort – and searching for a new sense of purpose.”

The accompanying music video for Genesis, an experiment in manipulating live-action footage using emerging AI video generation technology, has resulted in a budget-defying Tool-esque claymation video that has only been made possible by the new technological developments the industry and the world are now reckoning with.

Verticoli have toured relentlessly for a decade, and shared the stage with Australian music legends including Cog, British India and DZ Deathrays. They played at the Great Escape Music Festival, Falls Festival, and were triple j Unearthed Party In The Paddock competition winners.

Singles from Verticoli’s previous release ‘The Echo’ received support from radio stations like triple j and triple j Unearthed, Double J, Edge Radio, 2RRR, 4ZZZ, The Most FM (NZ), Southern FM, Phoenix Radio, 979FM and Aussie Music Weekly. The album received praise and positive reviews from the likes of AAA Backstage, AIR, Australian Music Scene, Tone Deaf, The AU Review, Music Feeds, Hysteria Magazine, The Music and The Underground Stage.
