Today, Winston Surfshirt unveils his lush new single, Spend My Nights, out now via Sweat It Out. Written in a flow state during a songwriting weekend in Kangaroo Valley, the demo almost slipped through the cracks until Winston rediscovered it months later and realised it was too good to stay buried.
Spend My Nights effortlessly blends the sounds of early-2000s nostalgia with Winston Surfshirt’s signature smooth style, creating a track that feels timeless and fresh at once. From the outset, the beat and melody lay the foundation with an ear worm groove, while the magnetic vocal hooks you in. But beneath the groove, there’s something much more personal at play. At its heart, Spend My Nights is an intimate expression of Winston’s nearly 20-year relationship with his partner. It’s a love song that doesn’t rely on grand gestures, but instead captures the quiet, everyday moments of a bond that’s strengthened with time.
Winston on today’s release:
“Spend My Nights is like an early 2000s love song. The premise is clear in the hook, ‘I’d rather spend my nights with you’. The verses are sorta me talking to my partner who I’ve been with since we were 15. She knows me more than I know me and after like 19 years, it’s sorta me addressing how I still feel the same now as I did back then and still wanna spend every night with her.”
Spend My Nights is the captivating follow-up to Winston‘s latest singles Ice Cream and Boots, both marking a new chapter in his artistry following the release of his 2022 album ‘Panna Cotta’. Ice Cream saw a first play on triple j’s Home and Hosed, while the latter of the two was featured on Zane Lowe’s New Music Daily and was highlighted by Apple Music as a priority track. To celebrate the release of Ice Cream, Winston played two surprise pop-up shows at Camp Cove and Manly Beach, performing on the back of a boat.
Winston Surfshirt began as the solo project of their eponymous frontman, singer, producer and rapper. Over time, he brought together close friends and local artists to form the globally beloved project that we know today. His extensive touring has led to sold-out shows across the UK and Europe, highlighted by iconic performances at Falls Festival, Spilt Milk, Field Day and Splendour in the Grass, with the latter immortalised on triple j’s Live At The Wireless. Across 250 million streams, three dreamy albums and collaborations with the likes of Cosmo’s Midnight, Benny Sings and Talib Kweli, the multi-Platinum and 4x Gold certified artist is celebrating nearly a decade of music-making, inviting fans along for the journey as he elevates and expands his sonic landscape.
