Off the back of their powerhouse showcases at BIGSOUND 2022, Brisbane / Gold Coast-based indie-rock outfit Girl and Girl are today unveiling their highly anticipated sophomore EP ‘Divorce’, ahead of their national headline tour.
Intriguing fans and critics alike with their unapologetic indie-rock flair, exhilarating stage presence and bold lyrical chops, Girl and Girl are delivering an emotionally sincere six-track experience in ‘Divorce’, which is a culmination of the band’s increasing sophistication, both sonically and personally.
“‘Divorce’ is a maturing of the Girl and Girl sound, taking the themes, lyrics and music more seriously,†frontman Kai James explains. “Our debut was a bit of a caricature of teenage Kai, poking fun and mocking the experiences of a late teenage boy, whereas divorce tackles themes much more honestly. My folks divorce and the years that followed truly were some of the most difficult times of my life, and from it came the man I am today. I wanted to pay homage to those trials and tribulations, I wanted little Kai to feel seen and heard.â€
Including groove-laden fan favourite Dance Now, the nostalgic longing of Garden Song and the pure slow-dancing intensity of recent single Divorce 2, the EP is unveiling three unheard songs, from decadent swelling opener Divorce 1 to toe-tapping romper Strangers and riff-rampant I See A Man.
Recorded at Swanpond Studios in Boonah and mixed by frequent collaborator Alistair Richardson (Clea, Zefereli, The Cairos), ‘Divorce’ is making history as the debut record pressed by Suitcase Records, the first Meanjin record press plant in 40 years – available HERE.
