MATH (FKA Maddi and The Hoopers) features Maddi McDonald, joined by brothers, Clay Hooper, Dylan Hooper and Sam Hooper. The band came together in 2018 and have been playing gigs at local venues around Rockhampton and beyond ever since. Now, MATH are bringing the fun with their second catchy single, Break My Heart.
The song was recorded at various studios across the Gold Coast. The drums were tracked at Qsound, the keys at guest artist Ian Peres’ home studio, and the bass, guitar and vocals at Luke Palmer’s home studio. Luke Palmer also did all of the recording, mixing, mastering and production.
“It was during a song writing session we decided we needed a fun, upbeat song to add to our repertoire. We knew we wanted a feel good, wham bam song that had The Wombats and Paramore feel good vibes too it”.
The bouncy track formed from a sped up chord progression that Clay had originally written for a slower song. He paired it with hummed chorus melody, and from then on, everything seemed to flow and come together really well. Maddi actually wrote the lyrics on the back of a receipt while working a retail job and got it done pretty quickly.Â
MATH all grew up heavily involved in music – Maddi with a background in music and performing arts and the Hooper brothers playing together as a band growing up. After supporting Tia Gostelow at the Yeppoon show on her 2019 Australian ‘Thick Skin‘ tour, the band have kicked many other goals. This has included additions to festival lineups, such at the Village Festival, opening for iconic Aussie rockers Thirsty Merc, and performing as a part of the pre-game entertainment at the NRL semi-finals in 2021.
MATH will be also be playing at the 10th Anniversary of the Capricorn Food & Wine Festival at Rockhampton opening for local legends Busby Marou on September 23rd which is turning out to be an incredible day of live music – we can’t wait to see you there!
