Square Tugs have come a long way in their short life span. They started playing live in late 2020 for a bit of fun as a Circle Jerks cover band.

They have played extensively since and generated a solid live following as a fun live band and now release their debut album, cheekily titled ‘Monster Hits’.

The Tugs debut four-song EP, released in September 2021 received an outstanding response from community radio across Australia with Vodka, Lime and Soda reaching number 4 on the 4ZZZ Hot 100. The EP has received enthusiastic reviews in Australia and from as far afield as
Russia, Brazil, Europe, and the UK including 7/10 in Vive Le Rock Magazine.

At the start of 2022 the band started writing for their debut album and soon had sixteen songs ready to record. The album was recorded at Recordworks in Coorparoo with producer Jason Millhouse and completed in May 2022. Each band member contributed songs to the album with the end result being a collaborative effort. There have been five singles released off the album with all songs receiving extensive airplay on community radio stations.

The album reflects the band’s extensive love of punk rock and features various styles of the genre including US west-coast, pop-punk and 80’s hardcore. As well as numerous punk sub-genres, the lyrical subject matter is also quite varied from light-hearted, quirky lyrics to personal and current issues.

The album cover was inspired by Hoodoo Gurus, Angry Samoans, and B-grade horror movies and features the band being chased down by Godzilla in Brisbane’s King George Square. Square Tugs are extremely excited to be one of the first projects off the press at the newly opened Suitcase Records based in Brisbane. ‘Monster Hits’ is available on 180-gram vinyl in a choice of yellow, pink or black all with a gatefold sleeve. The vinyl and a CD version will be available to purchase on their website, Bandcamp, at upcoming shows and selected record stores around South-East Queensland.

“We are so excited to release our debut album and can’t wait for people to hear it. We are hoping everyone will enjoy it and are looking forward to our album launch gigs” Paulie Tug

The band will launch the album at Eleven Dive Bar in Maroochydore on the 4th of November, Vinnies Dive Bar in Southport on 5th November and at The Zoo on 19th of November with The Glycereens, The Owen Guns and Burnt Trash. This is a show not to miss.
