Neck up ya Parrots! Totally Unicorn has come crashing back with thumping new single, Parrot, out today on Farmer & The Owl. They’ll also take their explosive live shows on the road, with a single tour set to kick off at the end of June, just in time for your EOFY celebrations.

The track, which had its first play on triple j’s short.fast.loud this week, was engineered by Lachlan Mitchell of Parliament Studios, Leichhardt (Gadigal/Sydney), who also recorded their 2022 album ‘High Spirits//Low Life’.

Lyrically, the song speaks for itself. The words alone are enough to conjure an all-too-clear image of a character most of us have encountered all too often at the pub or a party. “It’s the bloke that makes ya go, ‘Man, I wish he would shut up about his latest crypto deal,’ but you deal with it ’cause that’s the only way you’ll see inside that bag. Is this a new take on Totally Unicorn musically? I dunno, but we did a guitar solo. How many words is that?” – Drew (Vocalist/Aquarius)

Guitarist Aaron Streatfeild chimes in on the song, saying “Since High Spirits//Low Life, we’ve been tucked away in our little studio, working on new music. Lots of it has been absolutely terrible, but thankfully quite a few have turned out, and that’s what you can expect to hear over the next year at least. This is the first of many recording sessions, each with a different engineer. We’re branching out. We’ve got too many talented friends and not enough time on this Earth, so we’re going to keep pushing whatever genius we’ve stumbled on and put it in the hands of a wide range of engineers/producers and see what happens. It will be good of course, I’m just trying to meet the word count… cowabunga.”

The band also has a live music video to accompany the single (watch below), a compilation of footage taken on the band’s NZ tour (including their performances at music festival Camp A Low Hum) earlier this year. The video has nothing to do with the song, absolutely nothing. Apparently, because New Zealand is filled with many lovely, chilled, and kind people. And while Kiwis love a good party, they don’t seem to suffer quite as often, the personalities spelled out in the song’s lyrics. So, no point in tying the music video and track together, the band claim “it’s never stopped The Weekend (artist) so fuck it.”
