Meanjin/Brisbane-based indie four-piece Melaleuca have just unveiled their earnest new single Point Of Normal – produced by frontman Andy Francis and mixed by Brock Weston (Bugs, Beddy Rays).Â
Point Of Normal opens with bouncing kick drums, driving bass lines and Francis’s nonchalant yet nostalgic vocals before building effortlessly into distorted, hook-laden choruses. The track lifts with charming vocal harmonies and raucous guitar leads, creating a wave of heartfelt abandon as Francis sermonises with a relatable melancholy on his mental health.Â
Francis talks about the meaning behind Point Of Normal:Â
“When I was in the first year of my education degree, I was learning about the concept of ‘executive functioning’ and the behaviours of someone with poor executive functioning. I had this profound moment of thinking, ‘this lecturer is describing my life’. I had a full-on realisation that maybe my brain wasn’t functioning neurotypically, and it’s not that I’m just substantially lazier and messier than everyone else in my life. So, I wrote this song about the feeling like I’m not living my life to its full potential and the toll it takes on me.â€
To coincide with the release, the band will play a sold-out hometown show at Meanjin/Brisbane’s The Brightside, as well as appearances at the Crafted Beer & Cider Festival in Yugambeh/Gold Coast and Eora/Sydney’s Vic On The Park. They’ve previously toured nationally with Bugs and Teenage Joans and supported Australian luminaries Middle Kids, WAAX, Hope D, Sweater Curse, Tired Lion and Teen Jesus & The Jean Teasers.Â
Previous releases have been widely embraced by Australian radio stations triple j, triple j Unearthed, FBi, 3RRR, RTR FM, 2SER, SYN FM and 4ZZZ. They’ve also seen support from blogs Pilerats, Good Call Live, Ungrained Mag and Amnplify.
